Attorney General Todd Blanche said Wednesday that he and the Trump administration would support Congress passing a ban that prohibited the creation of the anti-weaponization fund, declaring that that effort is dead.

The attorney general, who only assumed office on Monday, formally gave up on the anti-weaponization fund last week after it became a key hold-up in his Senate confirmation process. 

“The president feels very strongly, as do I, that there were people who were victims of a Department of Justice that was absolutely weaponized," Blanche told reporters Wednesday. "He feels very strongly that he would want to make them whole, as do I. But it will not be through the anti-weaponization fund."

Blanche made the comment at an unrelated press briefing, where he announced charges against a group of 11 New Yorkers who allegedly were tied to a decade-long marriage fraud network allegedly involving more than 1,000 sham unions.

The anti-weaponization fund was created as part of a settlement with the IRS over the leak of Trump's tax returns. The funds were intended to provide relief for those who could prove a claim that they were unfairly targeted by the federal government.
