Violent crime in the United States dropped nationally in 2023, according to a new FBI Crime in the Nation report.

Violent crime decreased by 3% from 2022 to 2023, according to the report released on Monday.

Murder and manslaughter rates, specifically, dropped by 11.6% and rape dropped by more than 9%.

Property crimes, including burglary, have gone down by about 2.4% since last year but vehicle theft went up by 12.6%.

The FBI's crime reports contain criminal offenses "reported to the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program by participating law enforcement agencies."

In a report released in April, researchers with the Coalition for Law, Order and Safety (CLOS) concluded that true crime rates are likely higher than FBI statistics show.

According to a report from the Marshall Project in July 2023, FBI crime statistics are typically incomplete, given that not all local and state law enforcement agencies report crime statistics to the FBI.
