IRS warns of upcoming increases in hiring tax enforcers, report

The IRS commissioner said in recent remarks that the agency is going to start ramping up the hiring of tax enforcers in the coming months. 

During an interview with the Federal News Network, Commissioner Danny Werfel said fall is a very busy time when it comes to IRS recruiting and he hopes to hire more enforcement agents going into 2024. 

“I would expect hiring activity on the enforcement side to ramp up as we enter into 2024,” Werfel said during the interview.

According to The Epoch Times, these tax enforcer positions would be filled in over 250 locations across the U.S. 

He later added that the agency is currently experiencing some trouble with the hiring process.

“It’s a harder environment to recruit people into the federal government when there’s a lot of headwind around federal employment,” he said. 

The goal is to hire about 20,000 employees by the end of 2024. 

"There is a sea change taking place at the IRS in every aspect of our operations," Werfel said in a Sept. 8 statement, which notes their new plans regarding enforcement efforts and its efforts to catch people "abusing the nation's tax laws."

"The changes will be driven with the help of improved technology as well as Artificial Intelligence that will help IRS compliance teams better detect tax cheating, identify emerging compliance threats and improve case selection tools to avoid burdening taxpayers with needless 'no-change' audits," according to the statement.
