Mayorkas says Trump assassination attempt was a security 'failure'
An investigation and review into the incident, which saw Trump injured in his right ear, is currently being conducted by federal law enforcement agencies. Congress is also expected to hold a hearing on the shooting next week.
Homeland Security Secretary on Monday stated that the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump was a failure on the part of the Secret Service, after the agency failed to prevent the shooting from occurring.
An investigation and review into the incident, which saw Trump get injured in his right ear, is currently being conducted by federal law enforcement agencies. Congress is also expected to hold a hearing on the shooting next week.
“An incident like this cannot happen. That is precisely why President Biden directed an independent review, so that that review, its conclusions and its recommendations, have the full confidence of the American public,” Mayorkas told CNN. "When I say that something like this cannot happen, we are speaking of a failure."
The secretary said the agency, which oversees the Secret Service, is going to conduct the independent review of the shooting, which will be analyzed, and then the agency will make recommendations to ensure it does not happen again.
Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle said there have been changes to Trump's security detail since the assassination attempt, which will remain in effect for the rest of his presidential campaign. Trump was confirmed as the Republican nominee for president at the Republican convention on Monday afternoon.
Independent presidential contender Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who is the nephew of the late President John F. Kennedy Jr., and son of Robert F. Kennedy, both of whom were assassinated, has also been granted Secret Service protection in the wake of the shooting.
