Surgeon general calls for health warnings on social media platforms
"It is time to require a surgeon general’s warning label on social media platforms," says Dr. Vivek H. Murthy, the surgeon general.
Dr. Vivek H. Murthy, the surgeon general, called for health warnings on social media platforms in an op-ed published on Monday.
"It is time to require a surgeon general’s warning label on social media platforms, stating that social media is associated with significant mental health harms for adolescents. A surgeon general’s warning label, which requires congressional action, would regularly remind parents and adolescents that social media has not been proved safe," he wrote.
"Evidence from tobacco studies show that warning labels can increase awareness and change behavior. When asked if a warning from the surgeon general would prompt them to limit or monitor their children’s social media use, 76 percent of people in one recent survey of Latino parents said yes," he added.
In an X post on Monday, Murthy wrote that "social media has become an important contributor to our #YouthMentalHealth crisis. We are in the middle of an emergency, and it’s essential that Congress act with speed and urgency. The health and well-being of our kids is at stake."
