Left bashes Biden for nominating pro-life judge in apparent deal with McConnell

Kentucky's governor said he understands that Biden has not formally submitted the nomination yet

Americans on the left are bashing President Joe Biden for reportedly planning to nominate a pro-life judge in an apparent deal with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).

Democrat Kentucky Rep. John Yarmuth on Wednesday told the Louisville Courier Journal about Biden's plan to nominate Federalist Society contributor and former state solicitor general Chad Meredith to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky.

Yarmuth claimed Meredith's nomination came in exchange for McConnell agreeing to not stop the Biden administration's future federal nominations.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, a Democrat, confirmed Meredith's nomination to the media the next day, saying, "If the president makes that nomination, it is indefensible."

Beshear said he understands that Biden has not formally submitted the nomination yet and hopes it "means in the very least it's on pause."

Then-President Donald Trump considered nominating Meredith in 2020 to a federal judgeship, but ultimately did not do so.

Meredith is known for winning a 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals case that upheld a 2017 Kentucky abortion law requiring abortion providers to perform an ultrasound and describe the image to the pregnant woman, the Courier Journal reported.

Beshear also criticized Meredith for working on controversial pardons for the administration of Republican Gov. Matt Bevin.

Some liberals voiced their disapproval of Biden's rumored pick, which comes following the Supreme Court's decision, asserting that abortion is not a constitutionally protected right.

"Biden is set to appoint an anti-abortion Republican judge to a lifetime seat in a deal that he made with Mitch McConnell. How many more times do @TheDemocrats have to stab you in the back before you will find the courage to leave this abusive relationship?" Socialist podcaster Ryan Knight wrote on Twitter.

Laura Bassett, editor-in-chief of the feminist outlet Jezebel, called the alleged deal "a massive betrayal to the people [Biden] claims he's fighting for."

Feminist author Kimberley Johnson pointed out, "I don’t like it but evidently deal allows Biden to confirm ALL of his pro-choice judges without McConnell interfering."

Despite the rumored deal, McConnell and Biden have far from a warm relationship regarding the judicial system.

McConnell criticized Biden on Thursday for "[a]ttacking a core American institution like the Supreme Court from the world stage."
