Mamdani cuts video in which he informs migrants in NYC on their rights in dealing with ICE agents
"ICE is legally allowed to lie to you, but you have the right to remain silent," New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani said
New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani told immigrants in a video, "know your rights," amid raids by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
The video posted on X on Sunday came a week after protestors gathered as ICE attempted to detain people on Canal Street near Chinatown, Newsweek reported.
Mamdani, who will be sworn in as mayor on Jan. 1, said he would work to protect the city's 3 million immigrants, adding, "We can all stand up to ICE if you know your rights."
He said that people can choose not to speak to ICE agents, film them without interfering with arrests, and refuse their requests to enter private spaces. According to Mamdani, ICE agents cannot enter homes, schools, or private workplace areas without a judicial warrant signed by a judge.
"ICE is legally allowed to lie to you, but you have the right to remain silent. If you're being detained, you may always ask, 'Am I free to go?' repeatedly until they answer you," Mamdani said.
"New York will always welcome immigrants, and I will fight each and every day to protect, support, and celebrate our immigrant brothers and sisters," he added.
Mamdani's office and ICE didn't immediately respond to Newsweek's requests for comment.
