Powerful storms sweep across South, killing at least 19
The storms have turned north and are heading up the East Coast
A series of powerful storms swept across the South this past weekend, killing at least 19 people. The storms also knocked out power and destroyed hundreds of homes in at least 10 states including Arkansas, Georgia Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas and Virginia, before turning north and taking aim Monday at East Coast cities.
Mississippi appears hardest hit – with 11 people reported dead. And at least six people are dead in northwest Georgia, according to the Associated Press.
The storms reportedly cut power to about 750,000, causing flooding and mudslides in the Appalachian Mountains and elsewhere.
The deadly storms also spawned tornadoes in South Carolina. One person was killed in Arkansas when a tree fell on a home near Little Rock.
In South Carolina, a person was found dead in a collapsed building, according to news reports.
