A student at Rice University, in Houston, was killed Monday on campus in an apparent murder-suicide, according to authorities.

The incident resulted in the campus being locked down for about two hours on the first day of classes, after the two dead bodies were found in a dorm room.

The victim has been identified as Andrea Rodriguez Avila. She was discovered by university police after a family member requested a wellness check, according to Rice police Chief Clemente Rodriguez.

The shooter, who has yet to be identified, was found dead in the room with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

He does not appear to be affiliated with the university, police said.

A note from the suspect discovered at the crime scene suggests he and the student were in a "troubled romantic relationship," according to a local news report.
