'Rosary Rally' held outside Gov. Whitmer's house over her viral skit allegedly mocking Communion

A "Rosary Rally" was held outside Michigan Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's house over the weekend following the viral skit she participated in that was seen by some critics as mocking the Christian rite of Communion. 

"Catholics gathered around home of MI Gov Gretchen Whitmer praying Rosary in the rain," a group called Catholic Vote wrote on the social media platform, X, Sunday. 

Whitmer and podcast host Liz Plank appeared in a video posted to social media that showed Whitmer placing a Dorito onto the kneeling Plank's tongue in the same manner that priests place a wafer on the recipient's tongue in the Holy Eucharist. 

Critics of the video have blasted it as being anti-Catholic, but supporters claim that it was meant to be part of a trend on TikTok in which people feed each other food.

Whitmer apologized, saying "My team has spoken to the Michigan Catholic Conference. What was supposed to be a video about the importance of the CHIPS Act to Michigan jobs, has been construed as something it was never intended to be, and I apologize for that," according to the New York Post. 

Whitmer said in a statement to Fox News that she would "never do something to denigrate someone’s faith." 

"I’ve used my platform to stand up for people’s right to hold and practice their personal religious beliefs," she said. 

Michigan Catholic Conference President Paul Long said that the skit was not just "strange" or "distasteful" but that it did mock the faith.
