Syracuse police officer, sheriff’s deputy and suspect killed in shootout, police chief says

A shootout in upstate New York resulted in the death of a police officer, a sheriff’s deputy and the suspect on Sunday evening.

Syracuse Police Chief Joseph Cecile said during at a news conference that his police department and the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office were tracking a vehicle that didn't stop for police.

Two officers eventually discovered the vehicle at a residence and saw "what happened to be guns" inside, according to an Associated Press report.

The officers then “heard what sounded like someone manipulating a firearm from inside the residence,” Cecile said.

After that, a suspect began to fire at the officers.

The shooting occurred around 8pm in Liverpool, which is roughly 6 miles north of Syracuse.

“We lost two heroes tonight,” Cecile said.
