A new poll shows roughly six in 10 U.S. adults want any increase in the federal debt limit to be coupled with a plan to reduce the federal budget deficit.
The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll also shows about two-thirds of respondents say they are highly concerned about the impact on the national economy if the debt limit is not increased and the government defaults on its loans.
However, few of the respondents said they a solid understanding of the ongoing debt limit negotiations between President Biden and Congress, led by Republican House Speaker Kevin Mc Carthy, the poll also shows.
Congressional Republican want caps to federal spending in exchange for agreeing to increase the debt ceiling. However, Biden has so far been resistant to tying together the two matter, particularly regarding tighter work requirements on the country's food stamps program.
