Schumer urges Trump to withdraw ICE from US cities during rare White House meeting

“Schumer told President Trump that their actions are dangerous and putting more people at risk and he must pull back ICE from U.S. cities,” the statement said.

President Donald Trump met with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer at the White House Thursday where the pair discussed ongoing tension between American protesters and federal immigration operations nationwide.

Protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations have particularly surged in Minneapolis over the past week, after an ICE agent fatally shot a woman who hit the agent with her car. Minnesota officials argue that the shooting was unjustified, while federal officials counter that the agent acted in self-defense.

Schumer's office said the senator urged Trump to pull ICE agents from major cities because it was posing a risk to the public.

“Schumer also told President Trump that their actions are dangerous and putting more people at risk and he must pull back ICE from U.S. cities,” the statement said.

The White House has not publicly commented on the unusual meeting so far. The leaders met in a group last year to discuss an end to the federal government shutdown, but the pair rarely directly interacted, according to Politico

Trump reportedly called for the meeting in order to discuss funding for New York and New Jersey's Gateway tunnel project. The president threatened to withhold the funds for the project during last year's government shutdown, which would build new train tunnels under the Hudson River.

Schumer urged Trump to release the funds for the project, which have already been allocated, but also asked the president to push Senate Republicans to approve a three-year extension on Obamacare subsidies, which expired earlier this year.
