China leader Xi Jinping arrives in Russia for meeting with Russia President Vladimir Putin

Chinese President Xi Jinping landed in Russia on Monday for a three-day visit in which he will meet with Russia President Vladimir Putin. 

Xi landed shortly before 1 p.m. local time in Moscow, according to state media outlet TASS. The Chinese leader is expected to remain in Russia until Wednesday in his first international trip this year.

The Kremlin officially says Putin and Xi are expected to discuss the "further development of comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation between Russia and China" and will sign a "number of important bilateral documents."

However, the meeting, and whatever else that will likely be discussed, has major geopolitic relevance. 

China has not condemned Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, as have many other nations including the United States and those in Europe. 

"There is no simple solution to a complex issue" and that China has actively promoted peace talks," Xi said Monday.

Ahead of the trip, Xi also said he was traveling to Moscow to strengthen “friendship" and "cooperation," a concern for the U.S. considering Russia and China are its two biggest rivals.
