DeSantis' office slams journalist who said her job is to make governor 'uncomfortable'
DeSantis' office said the reporter's attempt to make the governor uncomfortable does not seem like it worked.
A Florida journalist was caught on a hot mic saying that part of her job is to make Gov. Ron DeSantis "uncomfortable," but the Republican governor's office responded by laughing at her comments and saying her attempt did not work.
"My job here is to ask the tough questions and make him uncomfortable, I guess," First Coast News reporter Atyia Collins is heard on a recording telling a fellow journalist about her work covering DeSantis before a press conference Tuesday.
Collins asked DeSantis at the end of the event: "We have seen bookshelves in schools empty in response to Florida's new guidelines on books. I'm wondering, is this–"
DeSantis cut her off by saying the video she was referring to was a "fake narrative" and he directed her to speak with his press team for more clarification.
"What they're trying to do is they're trying to act like somehow, we don't want books," DeSantis said. "There is longstanding Florida law that prohibits an adult from giving a school child pornography, but don't we think that's inappropriate to do?"
DeSantis rapid response director Christina Pushaw responded on Twitter to a video of Collins' interaction with DeSantis: "Finally, here's the so-called 'tough question' that she plotted to 'make him uncomfortable.' Doesn't seem like it worked ... Better luck next time 🤣."
Pushaw also said: "I don’t feel sorry for any journalist who openly behaves like a Democrat activist. ... It’s all unethical and has divided our country to the point of no return."
