Indiana governor Braun gives up on another redistricting special session, citing vote deficit

“I think that ship has sailed," Republican says after Senate votes decisively to reject redrawing Hoosier State's congressional districts, so the ruling party will "focus on the things we have under our control."

Despite President Trump's insults for Indiana GOP state senators who beat back an effort at early redistricting to give the party an edge in all nine of its congressional districts, his alleged threats to yank its federal funding in retaliation and Gov. Mike Braun joining the effort to primary the "no" votes, Braun says he won't push for another special session.

“I think that ship has sailed" because so many Republicans joined Democrats to reject redrawing the map by a 31-19 vote, the Republican governor told State Affairs.

The lopsided Senate vote, the inverse of the House vote, gives a "stark picture of how half of the Senate was out of sync with most Hoosier Republicans, what was happening in other states, requests from the administration," Braun told WTHR

"I don’t think that can be resurrected in this session," so Republicans will "focus on the things we have under our control," said Braun, crediting the Legislature as "heavily tilted in the direction of where freedom and opportunity and running government more efficiently make sense.”
