California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, said on Friday night that the Democratic Party has become “toxic” and “judgmental.”

“The Democratic brand is toxic right now,” he said on the "Real Time with Bill Maher" HBO show.

“We talk down to people. We talk past people,” he added.

In reference to the reasoning for starting his new podcast, "This Is Gavin Newsom," the governor said the GOP is "crushing" the Democrats when it comes to engaging the other side.

“I mean, this idea that we can’t even have a conversation with the other side … or the notion we just have to continue to talk to ourselves or win the same damn echo chamber, these guys are crushing us,” he said.

“Democrats, we tend to be a little more judgmental than we should be,” he also said.
