Former Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz on Friday said his party needs to create a "shadow government" that would emphasize the Democratic response to President Donald Trump's actions.

The term is a nod to the United Kingdom, where the opposition party creates its own version of the government that mirrors the country's current government and provides alternative solutions to issues facing the country, Fox News reported

Walz, who is currently the governor of Minnesota, said the alternative government is needed to counter the Trump administration's actions on issues like voting rights.

"We see one of the first things they do is try and restrict the vote," Walz said at a town hall in Wisconsin. "This is one of the things, though, that this is going to take power industry to — I don’t know what the answer is on this, but I’m kind of — I’ve been saying this: I think we need a shadow government, so when all these things come up every single day, we’ve got an alternate press conference telling the truth about what things are happening, tell them what’s going on."

The comment prompted backlash from Republicans, including Trump's Rapid Response social media team who referred to Walz as an "unhinged loser."

"Unhinged loser [Tim Walz] wants to form a 'shadow government' in protest of requiring proof of citizenship for voter registration and banning foreign nationals from interfering in elections," the account shared.

The comment comes as Democrats struggle to rally around a clear party leader in the wake of a poor showing in the 2024 general election. Republicans won back the White House, flipped the Senate, and retained control of the House.
