Biden blasted for saying US is sending cluster munitions to Ukraine as America runs out of shells
Biden was criticized online for his comments about the U.S. running low on the NATO-standard caliber.
President Joe Biden is being criticized for revealing sensitive military information regarding how the United States is sending cluster munitions, which are banned in more than 100 countries, to Ukraine to use in its war against Russia because America is running out of 155mm artillery shells.
Biden told CNN in an interview aired Sunday that "two things" influenced the U.S.'s decision to send cluster munitions.
The first factor is that "we're in a situation where Ukraine continues to be brutally attacked across the board by munitions, by these cluster munitions that are -- have dud rates that are very, very low, I mean, very high that are a danger to civilians," he said, according to CNN's transcript.
"Number two, the Ukrainians are running out of ammunition. The ammunition that they used to call them 155-millimeter weapons. This is a war relating to munitions, and they are running out of that ammunition and we're low on it," Biden also said.
A NATO-standard artillery caliber weapon, the 155 mm has been described by The Associated Press as a "critical" weapon for the war in Ukraine.
Biden was criticized online for his comments about the U.S. running low on the caliber.
"Does President Biden not care that our adversaries in communist China are listening?" conservative influencer Steve Guest tweeted in response to Joe Biden's remarks to CNN.
"Biden seems to be saying we’re sending cluster bombs to Ukraine because we’re running out of other munitions. Looks like a pretext for even more military spending to me," 2024 Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. tweeted. "The time has come to offer diplomatic alternatives to war + bring both sides to [the] negotiating table."
