Biden may have been referring to current French President Emmanuel Macron.

President Joe Biden said at a campaign event that he recently spoke with French President Francois Mitterrand, who died in 1996.

"Right after I was elected, I went to what they call a G7 meeting, all the NATO leaders. I was in, I was in South England," Biden recalled about a 2021 meeting. It is unclear what countries were present at the meeting, since most NATO nations are not G7 members and Japan, a G7 member, is not a NATO member.

"I sat down and I said, 'America is back,' and Mitterand from Germany, I mean France, looked at me, and said, said, 'You know, why, how long you back for?'" Biden said to laughter.

Biden may have been referring to current French President Emmanuel Macron.

The president's mental fitness has been under intense scrutiny ahead of the 2024 presidential election.
