British prime minister formally invites Trump and first lady to 'unprecedented' second state visit

“This is a letter from your majesty, the king. It’s an invitation for a second state visit. This is really special. This has never happened before. This is unprecedented,” Starmer said. “This is a very special letter, I think the last state visit was a tremendous success … this is truly historic.”

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Thursday brought President Donald Trump an invitation to a second state visit in England, an unprecedented move, which was extended by King Charles III.

The president previously met with the late-Queen Elizabeth II at a state visit during his first term in 2019, and has met with members of the British royal family since then. But the meeting would be the first state visit between Trump and the new monarch, who took over the throne in 2022, after the death of his mother.

Starmer, a member of the U.K.'s Labor Party, presented the invitation at a meeting with Trump at the White House.

“This is a letter from your majesty, the king. It’s an invitation for a second state visit. This is really special. This has never happened before. This is unprecedented,” Starmer said. “This is a very special letter, I think the last state visit was a tremendous success … this is truly historic.”

The invitation was extended to both Trump and first lady Melania Trump for a visit to Windsor Castle, which the president accepted.

“The answer is yes,” Trump said. “We look forward to being there and honoring the king and honoring really the country.”

Starmer also praised Trump's recent return to the Oval Office, claiming the United Kingdom has a "true friend in the Oval Office," in Trump, and praised the president's commitment to securing peace in Europe.

"[Trump has created] a deal I think would be celebrated in Ukraine and around the world," he said.

The comment comes as Trump prepares to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House on Friday morning.

"I think we’ve made a lot of progress," Trump said, referring to a peace deal. "I think it’s moving along pretty rapidly. And I want to thank all of the people that are here that have been working on it, and we’ll let you know what’s what happens."
