Elon Musk backs Florida’s Rick Scott for Senate Majority Leader
Washington awaits whether President-elect Donald Trump will make an endorsement in the Senate.
Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur who owns both the X social media platform and SpaceX, on Sunday threw his weight behind Sen. Rick Scott of Florida to be the next Senate Majority Leader.
As Washington awaits whether President-elect Donald Trump will make an endorsement in the Senate, Musk’s own thinking generated immediate attention.
"Rick Scott for Senate Majority Leader!" Musk wrote in a post on X after wrapping up a successful fall campaigning for Trump.
With Republicans winning the White House and the Senate, intrigue has gripped the nation’s capital over who will be Trump’s partner atop the Senate GOP.
Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky announced earlier this year he would not seek another term as GOP leader. He is the longest-serving Senate GOP leader in history.
Trump has kept his cards close to the vest on whether he will endorse a Senate GOP leader candidate, but on Sunday he called on all Republican senators to make sure they support recess appointments of Cabinet officers.
Scott’s bid was once seen as a long shot by some pundits, but he has picked up momentum after a convincing win for reelection in Florida and securing some high profile endorsements from fellow senators.
He is facing fellow Republicans John Cornyn of Texas and John Thune of South Dakota. The election by secret ballot is slated for Wednesday.
