Florida Republicans would 'welcome' national convention if Trump pulls it from North Carolina
The North Carolina governor is still working through coronavirus health-safety issues for the event
Florida Republicans are reportedly open to hosting the party’s national convention if President Trump indeed decides to move the event from North Carolina because its Democratic governor cannot guarantee that attendees will be allowed to fill the arena to capacity.
“The Republican Party of Florida would welcome the opportunity to host the Republican National Convention,” party Chairman Joe Gruters said in a statement obtained by Politico. “Florida is committed to ensuring a safe, secure and successful event for President Trump and all attendees.”
The event is scheduled for August 24 to 27 at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte. About 50,000 people were reportedly expected to attend the convention, in which the party officially nominates its presidential candidate. However, the coronavirus has limited the event for Republicans and Democrats who have scaled back their convention in Milwaukee from August 17 to 20.
North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper is reportedly working through data to decide whether the area can be opened to full capacity before making a final decision on the matter.
“They must be immediately given an answer by the Governor as to whether or not the space will be allowed to be fully occupied. If not, we will be reluctantly forced ...to find, with all of the jobs and economic development it brings, another Republican National Convention site,” Trump said Monday over a series of tweets.
