Biden calls into Harris' first meeting with new campaign staff: 'mission hasn't changed'
“I know yesterday’s news was surprising and it was hard for you to hear, but it was the right thing to do,” the 81-year-old president said in the phone call. “The name has changed at the top of the ticket, but the mission hasn’t changed."
President Joe Biden made an unexpected call on Monday into Vice President Kamala Harris's first meeting with her new campaign staff since the president endorsed her presidential bid.
Biden suspended his campaign on Sunday afternoon, at the urging of fellow Democratic leaders, over his ability to beat former President Donald Trump in November.
The president, who is currently in isolation because he tested positive to COVID-19, urged the staff in Wilmington, Delaware, to embrace Harris as the new Democratic candidate.
“I know yesterday’s news was surprising and it was hard for you to hear, but it was the right thing to do,” the 81-year-old president said in the phone call, per the New York Post. “The name has changed at the top of the ticket, but the mission hasn’t changed."
Biden said that he would support Harris in whatever campaign capacity she wanted, to which Harris said he was "not going anywhere."
“I’m watching you kid! I love you!” Biden responded.
Harris still needs to secure enough delegates to officially become the nominee in August, but Democratic governors and hundreds of delegates have already begun to rally behind her.
