President Trump is slated to meet with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the Oval Office on Tuesday. The president noted the upcoming meeting at Monday's coronavirus task force briefing.

Trump's former home state of New York has by far been the hardest hit state during the pandemic, reporting significantly more cases and deaths than the second-worst-hit state of New Jersey.

Trump, a Republican, and Cuomo, a Democrat, have occasionally criticized each other on social media and in their daily televised coronavirus briefings.

Cuomo has used the nationally televised events to say the administration needs to do more for his state in terms of supplying ventilators, hospital beds, testing kits and other equipment need to identify and treat patients.

Trump has told governors to be more self sufficient and has subtly pointed out that Cuomo has asked for more ventilators than turns out needs.

But on Monday, Trump made a point of saying that he has gotten along with U.S. governors in their fight against the virus and that he has come to like and respect them. He also read remarks made by Cuomo in which he agrees with the president on the issue of administering testing.

"The president is right," the governor said Monday during his daily briefing. "Testing is up to the states which will implement the tests and logistically coordinate the tests. For example in this state I should make the determinations as to what labs participate in testing."
