Trump warns he instructed US to 'obliterate' Iran if they assassinate him
The stark warning comes after the president signed an executive order in the Oval Office that applies maximum pressure on Iran through sanctions, which aim at curtailing Tehran's efforts to acquire nuclear weapons.
President Donald Trump on Tuesday sent a grave warning to Iran and its proxies, stating that he has left instructions for the United States to "obliterate" the Middle Eastern country if they assassinate him.
The stark warning comes after the president signed an executive order in the Oval Office that applies maximum pressure on Iran through sanctions, which aim at curtailing Tehran's efforts to acquire nuclear weapons.
The order instructs the Treasury Department to apply "maximum economic pressure" on Iran through sanctions that target its oil exports, according to Fox News.
Trump on Tuesday said that he was reluctant to sign the executive order, because it was so tough on Iran. But it comes after Iran allegedly plotted to assassinate Trump during his presidential campaign last fall, per the Justice Department.
"If they did [kill me], they would be obliterated," the president said on Tuesday. "That would be the end. I’ve left instructions, if they do it, they get obliterated, there won’t be anything left. And, they shouldn’t be able to do it."
The president survived two allegedly domestic assassination attempts during his presidential campaign last year.
Trump added that he thinks former President Joe Biden should have had a similar order during his presidency, and that Iran is "too close" to developing a nuclear weapon.
The comments come as Trump meets with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House.
