Tenney asks DOJ to look into NY bill that automatically registers all Medicaid applicants to vote

"While Albany Democrats characterize the measure as a voter access initiative, it creates significant and foreseeable risks of improper voter registration of individuals ineligible to vote under federal law," Tenney explained in her letter.

Rep. Claudia Tenney, R-N.Y., is asking the Justice Department to take a close look at a bill that would require New York's Medicaid program to automatically register applicants and enrollees to vote.

"While Albany Democrats characterize the measure as a voter access initiative, it creates significant and foreseeable risks of improper voter registration of individuals ineligible to vote under federal law," Tenney says in her written request Tuesday to acting Attorney General Todd Blanche.

The Senate bill passed Monday in the upper chamber. Tenney pointed out in her letter that under its Expanded Medicaid program, New York currently provides Medicaid coverage to illegal immigrants aged 65 and older.

The New York State of Health, the state's official health plan marketplace, published outreach materials on the expansion that stated "certain undocumented migrants" have been included in it.

Tenney wrote that there are "well-documented, significant deficiencies" in New York's Medicaid verification system, which creates risks of people who aren't eligible to vote being enrolled, if the bill should become law.
