The State Department is reportedly expected to oversee ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Lebanon in Washington, D.C., next week, an official told The Hill.

The U.S., Israel and Iran reached a two-week ceasefire agreement on Tuesday after Iran agreed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, but the ceasefire has been jeopardized by Iran continuing to prevent free passage through the strait, and continued conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, an Iranian proxy, in Lebanon.

It was not immediately clear what day the meeting would take place, but the U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon, Michel Issa, is expected to lead the talks, with Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Yechiel Leiter expected to represent his country. It was not clear who would represent Lebanon in the discussions.

The meeting comes after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu directed his government to quickly “open direct negotiations with Lebanon," which would focus on disarming Hezbollah and the return of peace between the neighbors.
