Treasury Department sanctions Iranian shipping empire
The new sanctions are part of the United States' efforts to ramp up economic pressure on the Iranian regime after it resumed attacking ships that were transiting the Strait of Hormuz earlier this month.
The Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control on Tuesday levied new sanctions against Iran's illicit shipping and sanctions evasion network, led by Mohammad Hossein Shamkhani.
The new sanctions are part of the United States' efforts to ramp up economic pressure on the Iranian regime after it resumed attacking ships that were transiting the Strait of Hormuz earlier this month.
The sanctions have been levied against more than 50 individuals, entities, and vessels that are part of Shamkhani's network, which allow Iran to continue dodging sanctions and profiting from illicit oil exports.
“The Iranian regime survives on deception, and the Shamkhani network is one of its most profitable engines,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a statement. “Treasury is shutting down the financial infrastructure that allows the regime to continue its threats to U.S. national security and global shipping.”
The new actions build upon earlier sanctions and mean the department has now sanctioned more than 200 individuals, entities and vessels operating under Shamkhani’s network.
