President Donald Trump criticized Minnesota Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar on Tuesday as a "very dishonest person," and predicted she could go to jail over allegations that she committed immigration fraud.

Omar has been the focus of a federal investigation that centers on allegations that the lawmaker or her father lied about her birth year on immigration paperwork to obtain her citizenship when her family fled Somalia in the late 1990s.

Trump confirmed to reporters at the White House that Omar could face deportation if she committed fraud but warned that the penalty could be even worse with jail time.

"Oh she could, but she could also go to jail," Trump said. "They keep talking about deportation. No, she could go to jail. This is just my opinion. I think she's a sick, very dishonest person who hates our country — and she comes from a country that is essentially not even a country, Somalia.

"It's got no government, it's got no police protection, all they do have is people running around shooting each other," he continued. "Then she comes over here and she wants to tell us how to run America ... She's a disgrace to our country and it's amazing that she can get elected. But you know, Somalians vote for her and most of them should not be here."

The comment comes after Trump's border czar Tom Homan said over the weekend that he believes federal investigators have a "strong case" against Omar, but added that he does not want to get ahead of the FBI and Department of Homeland Security.
