Independent security researchers used Anthropic's Claude software to gain access to an Open AI employee's ChatGPT account, which allowed them the ability to read and suggest changes to the company's private software cache.

The team was participating in an OpenAI bug-hunting program that offers a safe harbor for researchers to attempt to break into corporate systems, the Wall Street Journal reported, and they quickly reported their findings to the company.

OpenAI paid the team a $6,500 bounty.

The news comes two weeks after rogue AI agents broke out of a containment at OpenAI to hack the company Hugging Face, and three AI researchers with Anthropic went public with concerns about risks they argue AI poses to the human race.

Shortly after, Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, called for greater guardrails on AI development and proposed a three-step plan to balance the rate that aims to ensure safety while still achieving the benefits of the technology.
