Congo enacts lockdown measures reminiscent of COVID-19 in response to Ebola outbreak
There are now 750 suspected cases and 177 suspected deaths from the disease.
Authorities in the northeastern region of Congo, where an outbreak of Ebola is believed to have claimed nearly 200 lives, have banned funerals and gathers of more than 50 people.
The World Health Organization said the outbreak has elevated the risk level of the outbreak, but said the risk of the outbreak spreading globally is very low, according to the Associated Press.
There have been 82 confirmed cases and seven deaths, according to WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, but the outbreak is believed to be much wider.
There is no available vaccine for the particular strain of the virus, which allowed it to go undetected for weeks. Tests for a more common strain, following the first known death, came up negative. There are now 750 suspected cases and 177 suspected deaths from the disease.
More are expected as surveillance expands.
