Sen. Tim Sheehy, R-Mont., on Friday broke with President Donald Trump over his plan to allow an influx of beef imports without subjecting them to tariffs.

Trump made the announcement on Thursday evening, evidently hoping that a supply influx would lower prices in the short term. Sheehy, for his part, opposed the move, saying that it would adversely impact American efforts to bolster domestic production.

"I’ve advised President Trump against this course of action for a year because American ranchers have been struggling against the packer monopoly for decades, and this will further harm them - most of whom are MAGA Republicans," he posted on Truth Social.
"The President’s heart is in the right place on wanting lower prices for the American people, and beef prices have been impacted by the Mexican screwworm."

"But the reality is this action will make it more difficult for American ranchers to rebuild our herd and bring prices down for the American people. And most importantly, this will harm our ranching families who feed the nation," he added.

Rising beef prices have ranked among the main contributors to overall grocery bills in recent years, with the issue increasingly becoming a weak point for lawmakers ahead of the midterms.

Sheehy, for his part, is not facing reelection.
