DHS says dozens of drones have been seized in the first few days of FIFA World Cup
The tournament began on June 11 in Mexico City, but matches have since been played at eight of the 11 World Cup stadiums in the United States.
The Department of Homeland Security reported Wednesday that dozens of drones have been seized at stadiums where the FIFA World Cup matches are being held since the tournament started last week.
The tournament began on June 11 in Mexico City, but matches have since been played at eight of the 11 World Cup stadiums in the United States.
Officials said there have been 145 reported “incursions” in restricted space across venues in Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Seattle. Authorities have thwarted 55 drones and seized 39 across those eight venues, according to Politico.
The numbers do not include inclusions in Miami, Los Angeles or New Jersey, but the FBI said it has ticketed 25 operators and seized 28 drones in Miami so far.
The reported drone incursions come after the FBI and U.S. Secret Service said it stopped a terror plot to attack the UFC 250 event at the White House over the weekend with drones and snipers.
It was not clear if any of the drones surrounding the World Cup were carrying disruptive devices or potential explosives, Politico reported.
