A federal appeals court ruled on Monday that Sigal Chattah was unlawfully appointed as Nevada's top federal law enforcement officer. 

As a result of the ruling, Chattah, a prominent Nevada conservative who previously served as the state's Republican National Committeewoman, can no longer oversee federal prosecutions in Nevada. 

The Trump administration in March appointed Chattah as Nevada's interim U.S. attorney, which comes with a 180-degree term. The day before that term expired, the administration appointed her as first assistant U.S. attorney. Then-Attorney General Pam Bondi said that appointment allowed Chattah to serve 210 days, the Nevada Independent reported. 

In February, the White House nominated Las Vegas lawyer George Kelesis to assume the top role on a permanent basis. Both the state's senators have met with Kelesis, and Sen. Jacky Rosen, D-Nev., is reviewing the nomination, her office told the Independent. 

Monday's ruling upheld a lower court's ruling that allowed her to stay in the position pending the appeal. The Trump administration has the option of appealing the decision to the Supreme Court, but it hasn't asked the court to review similar rulings in other states.
