The Justice Department has changed the federal prosecutor who is leading its investigation into former CIA Director John Brennan, the Washington Examiner reported Friday.

The department reassigned Maria Medetis Long to another case, two sources told the outlet, but it was not immediately clear who would take over the investigation or the cause for the change.

A Justice Department spokesperson did not divulge the reason for the change but indicated that the move was standard.

"As a matter of routine practice, attorneys are moved around on cases so offices can most effectively allocate resources," the spokesperson said. "It is completely healthy and normal to change members of legal teams.”

The case is being handled by U.S. Attorney Jason Reding Quiñones’s Office in Miami.

Brennan is being investigated for his role in the 2016-17 Russia collusion probe that has since been discredited, including a CIA assessment that Russian president Vladimir Putin tried to help President Donald Trump win the 2016 election.

The investigation is also looking into whether Brennan gave false testimony to Congress in 2023 regarding his role in trying to include the Steele Dossier in the intelligence assessment that suggested Russia tried to help Trump beat Hillary Clinton. That testimony is still covered by the five-year statute of limitations for prosecuting false testimony to Congress.
