New York has declined under the second Trump administration to process over 16,000 Immigration and Customs Enforcement orders to detain suspected illegal migrants accused or convicted in more than 50,000 criminal charges, according to a news report Tuesday morning.

The number is being reported by The New York Post based on what the news outlet said was new data from the Department of Homeland Security.

The Post says the department says municipalities across the state have refused to comply with its detainment requests 16,070 times since President Trump re-entered office roughly two years ago.

Homeland Secretary Markwayne Mullin appears to be putting the blame on the Democrat-led state's top leaders, particularly Gov. Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Zohran Mandami.

“We enforce these laws with no help from Mayor Mamdani and Governor Hochul," Mullin told The Post.

At issue are so-called sanctuary city policies in which states and municipalities limit how much local governments and police cooperate with federal immigration enforcement agencies – particularly restrictions on holding immigrants in jails following an ICE “detainer."

“While sanctuary politicians continue to release dangerous criminals onto their streets, our brave law enforcement officers will continue to risk their lives to arrest these heinous criminals and make America safe again. Illegal aliens have no sanctuary in America," Mullin said to The Post.

Hochul's office responded to the allegation, telling the newspaper: “Governor Hochul has been clear: New York State is not and never will be a sanctuary for violent criminals. By law, New York State always notifies federal immigration enforcement of any non-citizen serving a State prison sentence."

The newspaper says that according to DHS, 52,503 criminal charges or convictions are associated with the ICE detainers including 131 homicides, 132 kidnappings and 1,017 sexual offenses.
