New York Knicks owner Jim Dolan told reporters Wednesday that the team has just accepted an invitation to visit the White House, setting them up to be the first NBA champions to visit under the Trump administration.

The Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday night to win the series 4-1, marking their first championship victory since 1973.

President Donald Trump, a fan of the Knicks, attended the third game of the series in New York City last week after receiving an invitation from Dolan. The game was the only one the Knicks lost during the series.

"We just did receive an invitation from the White House, which we accepted,” Dolan told WFAN New York. “We still have to figure out the details, et cetera, but yes, of course. Look, I invited the president to come down for the game. He is a friend. I’ve known him for 30 years and I’m very proud to bring the team to the White House.”

It was not clear if the full team will visit the White House and meet the president, but the appearance will make them the first NBA champions to visit the White House under Trump. Last year's victors, the Oklahoma City Thunder, cited a scheduling conflict when declining the invitation.

During the president's first administration, the Golden State Warriors declined twice to visit the White House, followed by the Toronto Raptors in 2019 and the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020, according to USA Today.
