President Donald Trump insisted Friday night that the Senate "must act" when it returns to session next week, claiming the chamber is "killing our country" with its inability to get things passed.

The Senate is expected to return for a lame duck session next week after Republicans faced a brutal defeat in both chambers during the midterms on Tuesday night, meaning the GOP will only maintain a majority in the chambers until January.

“The Senate has to act," the president told reporters in Florida following remarks at the Kennedy Space Center. "The Senate is getting nothing passed, and it’s just killing our country.

“Democrats and Republicans are just not getting anything done," he continued. "The Democrats vote in a block. We could have the best bill in the world for our country. They vote in a block, and we always have a few Republicans that obstruct.

"[The Senate is] the biggest problem we have, it’s a roadblock," he added. "You send things to the Senate when you want it to die. The Senate is killing our country.”

The president said one of the main reasons Republicans saw such a big defeat this week was because of the Senate and its inability to pass meaningful legislation, though he declined to specifically blame Senate Majority Leader John Thune.

Republicans are slated to hold their leadership elections in the Senate next week, though Wisconsin GOP Sen. Ron Johnson is attempting to delay the vote. No Republican has publicly launched a bid to replace Thune as GOP leader.
