Andrew Gillum reportedly in Miami Beach hotel room when man overdosed
Gillum is considered a rising star in Democratic Party
Andrew Gillum, a rising Democratic Party star and former Tallahassee, Florida, mayor, was reportedly in a Miami Beach hotel room early Friday when emergency crews arrived on a call for a probable drug overdose.
Paramedics purportedly arrived at the Mondrian South Beach Hotel shortly after midnight and got the patient into stable condition before police arrived.
However, officers purportedly couldn’t talk to Gillum because he had too much to drink and was vomiting in the bathroom.
Police also reportedly saw, then confiscated three small but visible plastic bags of suspected crystal meth.
The incident is reportedly not being investigated as a crime.
Gillum is also a CNN commentator. He lost a high-profile 2018 Florida governor’s race to Republican Ron DeSantis.
Gillum apologized after the incident Friday.
“While I had too much to drink, I want to be clear that I have never used methamphetamines,” he said, according to The New York Times. “I apologize to the people of Florida for the distraction this has caused our movement.”
He also thanked the paramedics for their efforts.
