Chicago Bears announces passing of long-time owner Virginia McCaskey at the age of 102
“While we are sad, we are comforted knowing Virginia Halas McCaskey lived a long, full, faith-filled life and is now with the love of her life on earth,” the Bears said in a statement.
The Chicago Bears football team on Thursday announced the passing of its long-time owner Virginia McCaskey, who died at the age of 102.
McCaskey inherited the team from her father George “Papa Bear” Halas in 1983. Her brother George Halas Jr. died in 1979, before George Sr., leaving McCaskey the sole heir.
“While we are sad, we are comforted knowing Virginia Halas McCaskey lived a long, full, faith-filled life and is now with the love of her life on earth,” the Bears said in a statement. “She guided the Bears for four decades and based every business decision on what was best for Bears players, coaches, staff and fans.”
Under McCaskey's leadership, the team has boasted a 335-340 record since 1983 and 105-139 since 2010. But the team also won its only Super Bowl in 1986, according to the New York Post. Her son George III is the current chairman of the Bears.
She is survived by nine children, 21 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Two of her 11 children already passed away. Her husband Ed McCaskey died in 2003, according to CBS News.
