4 injured in suburban Chicago funeral procession shooting, police say
No bystanders were injured in the shooting and multiple shell casings were recovered at the scene.
Four people were injured in a shooting during a funeral procession in the western Chicago suburb of Oak Park, police said.
The shooting occurred in the Illinois town around 1 p.m. local time on Saturday, the Oak Park Police Department said.
The funeral procession was traveling from Chicago to a cemetery in the nearby town of Des Plaines "when passengers in a white pickup truck pulled alongside one of the vehicles in the procession and began firing weapons, striking two passengers," police said.
Two passengers in another vehicle were also hit by gunfire and transported themselves to hospitals.
Police said four Chicago men were left with gunshot wounds, including one man in critical condition, one in critical but stable condition and two who sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
"Our job as law enforcement officials is to bring the individual or individuals responsible for this crime to justice to make clear that senseless gun violence has no place in our community or any community for that matter," Police Chief Shatonya Johnson said.
No bystanders were injured in the shooting and multiple shell casings were recovered at the scene.
Officials also said it is standard procedure for funeral homes to alert police to potentially high-risk funeral processions so law enforcement can assist with safety, but no alerts were provided before the processional.
Law enforcement has not released any further information about the person or people responsible for the shooting.
