Motorist drives car into crowd of people in German Christmas market, at least two people dead
The driver of the car has been arrested and there is an ongoing investigation into the situation.
A car drove into a crowd of people in Germany at a Christmas market in the city of Magdeburg on Friday, which has killed at least two people so far and injured at least 60 others.
“This is a terrible event, particularly now in the days before Christmas,” Saxony-Anhalt Gov. Reiner Haseloff said in response to the event, according to the Associated Press.
Local officials have reportedly described what happened as a terrorist attack.
The death toll has risen to two people, and at least 60 others are injured, with 15 of them being seriously injured. The two fatalities are an adult and a small child, authorities said. Magdeburg’s University hospital said it is treating 10-20 patients and preparing to treat more.
The driver of the car has been arrested, and has been described as a 50-year-old Saudi doctor. But an investigation into the situation is still ongoing.
Magdeburg has about 240,000 people living there and is west of the German capital.
