Ex-Minneapolis police officer Tou Thao sentenced to 5 years in prison over George Floyd's death
Floyd's death sparked protests and riots across the United States led by the Black Lives Matter movement.
Former Minneapolis Police Officer Tou Thao was sentenced Monday to nearly five years in prison for his role in the 2020 death of George Floyd.
Thao, the last of four officers convicted in Floyd's murder, had testified that he blocked bystanders who gathered as former Officer Derek Chauvin, who is white, knelt down on Floyd's neck for nearly 10 minutes as he died in May 2020.
Floyd's death sparked protests and riots across the United States led by the Black Lives Matter movement.
Thao was sentenced to 4 years and 9 months in prison, which will be served concurrently with his 3 1/2-year sentence on a separate federal civil rights conviction, according to The Associated Press.
