A gunman opened fire Saturday afternoon in a crowded outlet shopping mall in the Dallas area, sending shoppers scrambling and killing seven before a police officer was able to neutralize the shooter.

Seven others were wounded, including a 5-year-old, authorities said.

Police in Allen, Texas, said there was no longer a threat to the public from the shooting, which began shortly before 3:40 PM at Allen Premium Outlets.

Police Chief Brian Harvey told an evening news conference that a police officer was on an unrelated call nearby when gunshots erupted at the mall, and the officer was able to engage the shooter.

“Nine victims were transported to local hospitals by Allen Fire Department. A multi-agency response helped secure the mall. There is no longer an active threat. A reunification point has been created on Chelsea Boulevard,” Allen police tweeted.

“Our hearts are with the individuals and families impacted by this tragic event,” the department added.

Later, police said that eight victims had died and seven were hospitalized. There was a little information late Saturday identities of the casualties.

Fontayne Payton, 35, was shopping when he heard the gunshots through his headphones. “It was so loud, it sounded like it was right outside,” Payton told The Associated Press.

Payton said he saw bodies outside the mall. “I pray it wasn’t kids, but it looked like kids,” he said.
