Norfolk, Virginia shooting leaves 7, including college students, injured

Seven people are wounded, including college students, following an off-campus shooting early Sunday in Norfolk, Virginia.

The Norfolk Police Department said it is investigating a shooting in the 5000 block of Killam Avenue after a call came in around midnight. Seven people were taken to the hospital, two with life-threatening injuries. 

The shooting occurred about four miles from Norfolk State University and less than half a mile from Old Dominion University. 

Norfolk State tweeted early Sunday morning that the campus is secure but "several NSU students have been the victims of a shooting at an isolated off-campus location." The school said counseling is available for students in need. Norfolk State is a public historically black university with about 5,500 students.

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital's Trauma Center, located about two miles from the incident location, was also placed on lockdown due to the shooting, local outlet WTKR reported. Patients were sent to other hospitals for treatment. A hospital spokesperson announced around 5 a.m. that the lockdown was lifted.
