One student killed following shooting at North Carolina high school

One student died of their injuries from a school shooting in Winston-Salem, N.C., Wednesday afternoon, with police in search of a suspect who is believed to be a fellow student.

Following the shooting at Mount Tabor High School after 12 p.m., the school was put on lockdown, WXII news station reported. Other schools nearby were also locked down as a precaution.

In addition to local police and emergency services, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) also responded to the shooting.

Parents of students at the school were told to meet their children at a nearby grocery store, following the shooting. The rest of the students were safe, according to the deputies from the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office.

The one student who was shot, William Chavis Raynard Miller Jr., had been taken to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, but died of his injuries.

The Winston-Salem Police Department tweeted the name of the student, saying, "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family today and in the difficult days to come."

"After we secured the place and transported Mr. Miller to Baptist Hospital, I went to the hospital …" Forsyth County Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough said, according to the New York Post.

"I haven't cried in a while but I've been crying since I left the hospital," he said. "A lot of people in need of prayer right now; the Miller family, his mother Shannon. A lot of people in need of prayer."

Forsyth County District Attorney Jim O'Neill said, "They were hiding under the desk in fear not knowing what's going on. As a parent and as the district attorney here there's really not much worse that you could imagine," the Post reported.

Democratic North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper tweeted, "For the second time this week, we have seen a shooting in a North Carolina school. Our prayers are with the victims, their families and all the students of Mt. Tabor High School in Winston-Salem. I have been briefed by law enforcement and the Department of Public Safety is ready to provide any support necessary. We must work to ensure the safety of students and educators, quickly apprehend the shooter and keep guns off school grounds."

The shooter is believed to be a fellow student who is still at large, according to authorities.

"We are actively seeking the suspect," police wrote. "We have no confirmed information of any other shootings or injuries."
