Three family members of NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson found shot dead
Police are investigating the possibility of a murder-suicide.
Three people were found dead Monday night at a home in Muskogee, Oklahoma, belonging to NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson's in-laws, police investigating the deaths have confirmed.
Police found the bodies of Jack Janway, 69; his wife Terry Janway, 68; and their grandson Dalton Janway, 11, at the home in Muskogee, which is about 50 miles southeast of Tulsa, according to the The Associated Press. Investigators believe Terry Janway shot her husband and grandson and then turned the gun on herself, said police spokesperson Lynn Hamlin.
Hamlin confirmed that the Janways are the parents of Chandra Janway, Jimmie Johnson's wife.
On Monday around 9 p.m., police said that Terry called 911 and reported a disturbance and someone with a gun. Officers reportedly found a person lying in the hallway inside the front door, then heard gunshots from further inside the house, prompting them to pull the person in the hallway out of the house.
Police called out for others in the house and moved in after getting no response, finding the bodies of Terry and Dalton.
"It was traumatizing to find out that a longstanding family who had made so many contributions to our community were involved in this type of incident," Muskogee Mayor Marlon Coleman said in a Fox 23 interview on Tuesday. Coleman said he was a friend of the family and a patient of Jack Janway's chiropractic practice.
Police say there is no further threat to the community since the suspect is among those deceased.
"The Johnson family has asked for privacy at this time and no further statements will be made," Jimmie Johnson's motor club said in a statement.
Johnson is a seven-time NASCAR champion. His team has pulled out of an upcoming NASCAR race in Chicago following the tragedy.
