Award-winning historian David McCullough dead at 89

McCullough is best known for his Pulitzer Prize-winning presidential biographies "Truman" and "John Adams."

Historian David McCullough, an award-winning and best-selling author, passed away at his home in Massachusetts at the age of 89.

His daughter Dorie Lawson confirmed that he died on Sunday, The New York Times reported.

McCullough is known for his presidential biographies "Truman" and "John Adams," both of which won Pulitzer Prizes. Other popular books of his include "1776," which is about the Amerian Revolution, and "The Johnstown Flood," which is about a Pennsylvania dam failure in 1889.

He earned about 40 honorary doctorates and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2006.

His wife died in June at 89. McCullough is survived by his five children, 19 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
