Brazil buries soccer legend Pelé in town of Santos
Pelé died in late December at the age of 82, following a battle with colon cancer.
Brazil on Tuesday buried soccer legend Pelé in the town of Santos, his childhood town where he spent most of his professional career.
Decades ago, the soccer star ranked among the world's most famous athletes and many Brazilians credit him with showcasing Brazil to the rest of the world.
Present at the funeral was President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who attended the mass held at the Vila Belmiro stadium, where Pelé played many a game, according to the Associated Press. Former President Jair Bolsonaro was not in attendance as he has left the country and he is currently staying in Orlando, Fla.
The casket was then transported through the town of Santos, throughout which fans lined up to wave a final goodbye to the sports superstar. He was then buried in the local cemetery, where supporters played his team's song, a Catholic hymn, and Samba songs that he had enjoyed.
